NC State College Graduate Uses Leadership Skills to Inspire Others

Gloria Huber, North Central State College, Tutoring Center

Gloria Huber began taking classes at North Central State College in 2012.  She says, “My mom and sister graduated from here, and I knew it was the right place for me, too.”  The class sizes are one of the many reasons she was attracted to the college. “They are smaller and more affordable than other schools across Ohio,” she explains.

Huber has a passion for working with kids.  It all started while she was a student at Pioneer Career and Technical Center.  That is where she was able to work with young children enrolled in the Childcare Center.   She chose to continue that career path at North Central State College and obtained her Associate of Art: Education Focus degree, which is one of many transfer degrees available.  After graduating with her associate degree, she was able to take the credits she earned and seamlessly transfer to The Ohio State University at Mansfield. She says, “I was able to take my core classes at North Central State and transfer to Ohio State Mansfield. Every one of my credits transferred to Ohio State Mansfield.”

Huber continues to make an impact on the NC State students as a tutor in the Resource Center. She enjoys helping students who need a little extra boost to get them through a class. “I would tell any student to come to the tutoring center and ask for help.  People can go there and learn but also get to know other students.”

Huber serves as president of the National Society of Leadership and Success chapter which includes students from both NC State and The Ohio State University at Mansfield. The NSLS is the nation’s largest leadership honor society.  Students are selected for membership based on academic standing or leadership potential.  To be a member students must attend orientation, leadership training day, three speaker broadcasts, and three success networking team meetings.

Society members must also be involved in community service projects.  Huber says those projects made a lasting impression on her.  She participated in a project called “Letters to Santa.”  She, along with another student, went to Galion Elementary School where the kindergarten class wrote letters to Santa Claus.  Huber explains, “We gathered the letters from the students and then replied to every one of them.  It meant a lot to the students and also to us.”

Huber plans to continue as the President of the NSLS while she studies to obtain her Bachelor’s Degree in Early Childhood Education from Ohio State University Mansfield.
