Academic Advising

Academic Advising

All students will have an assigned advisor while attending North Central State College ─ first a Success Coach, then an Academic Liaison, and finally a Faculty Advisor. This three tiered advising approach ensures that students will successfully stay on path towards achieving their personal, educational and career goals.

After students apply to the college and meet with Admissions, they meet with a Success Coach in the Student Success Center, opens in a new window to discuss long-term goals, challenges and to develop a two-term Academic Plan. The Success Coach is the initial advising contact who assists the student through the enrollment process, New Student Orientation and during the first term of college or completion of designated courses. The Success Coach also assists in career choice, if needed.

After the first term (or completion of designated courses), the student is electronically assigned to another advisor, called an Academic Liaison. The liaison is located in the building of the student’s major. A liaison is housed in Fallerius for Liberal Arts and Human Services; in Kehoe for Business, Workforce Development and Criminal Justice; and in the Health Science building for all pre-health and health majors. These advisors will review the student’s major and monitor students’ classes each term through graduation through an Academic Plan. This “long-term plan” is always available for students to see in the Academic Planning & Registration Tool through MyNC.

Once the academic liaisons have helped students plan their classes through graduation (or their being accepted into programs in the Health Science division), they are transitioned to a faculty advisor in their field and will receive an email notification of their assigned faculty advisor. This faculty advisor will be available to answer any questions the students might have regarding graduation, their final terms, employment or possible transfer to a four-year college.

This combination of the student success advisors at the front end, followed by major-specific liaisons and faculty advisors helps ensure that students choose a path immediately and receive specialized advice and planning at the right time in their college career.

If you have questions regarding your academic plan or you need help registering for classes, contact the Student Success Center at 419-755-4536 or stop by for assistance.
